I've given this a four star rating. I was not greatly impressed, but the book is not aimed at me. I picked it up because I like fantasy and Norse mythology. I believe this book would be enjoyed by middle schoolers. There is no real complexity. The kids are basically good kids. The adults are adults who love their children and want to protect them (thank goodness). The bad guys are bad guys for no apparent reason (Kendra was corrupted but it is not clear why. Does she crave power? Did she fall in love with Loki? Does Loki have a spell on her?). The adventure is fun. There is a little bit of deus ex machina (the horn, the "chosen" one) but not enough to ruin the story. The kids have to work hard for their victory. There is a happy ending to this story. But Kendra gets away to fight another day. The Catacombs of Vanaheim is the next book. Kendra returns with a vengeance. And the story continues.

It is clear the author knows his Norse mythology well, and there are no glaring anachronisms.

Shield Maiden Richard Denning 9780956810373 Books Reviews

The story was good and the pace was steady and entertaining, although a bit "middle-school," short and quick-ended like a fairy tale. I enjoyed reading Shied Maiden, but it did leave me thinking that it could have done with a bit more meat on its bones.
A young lady becomes just what she has always wanted, and all is well at the end. With an open ending leaving a starting point for the next novel in the series. It is good to get lost in historical fiction and learn more about early Anglo life through this beautiful tale of courage and becoming what your destiny calls for you to be.
The 1st chapter to me was hard to get through but the book began to interest me. I actually had a hard time putting it down. I love reading books on gods. It fascinates me.
I don't know what I was expecting when I started this book, but it was not what I got. The story was fast paced with lots of adventure. A girl learns that a champion is not something you are born with, it is something that happens when you protect those you love.
A short, enjoyable story for middle grades. The author does a good job of bringing the world of the Angles to life. It is interesting to read a story about the early gods of England. I was not aware that another culture shared the stories of Asgard. The heroine of the story learns many lessons about herself, and the world(s) around her, and does a good job of being a true leader. She is not conceited or power-hungry, and allows the people around her to use their special abilities to achieve their goals.
This was an enjoyable story for me, as I have a great interest in Anglo-Saxon England. I like the characters, and there was plenty of action and dramatic tension to keep me interesting. My only problem with it was that the writing was a little rough. The author made a lot of beginning-writer mistakes, such as; overuse of adverbs, intrusive dialogue tags, and the use of words like "suddenly" and "began," which have fallen from favor in modern narrative style. I think if Denning can polish up his writing a bit, his work could go from good to great.
I enjoyed it very much. Yes it's mostly fir the young and it's very much for the young at heart. A story of a young girl and her friends finding their courage and their fate "Wyrd" as the book calls it. Truly enjoyed it and unlike so many others the hero accepts her fate without complaining or being stuck in herself.
